Groundhog Day Comes Early This Year

Remember the classic Bill Murray movie, Groundhog Day, where the lead character is for a time doomed to repeat the same day over and over again?  Well, as the 2009 General Assembly session approaches, Virginia Democrats are again setting the stage for another replay of their endless loop: taxing and spending their way out of tough budget issues, just like they have done so many times before.

Republicans on the March...Already

Has the turnaround begun?  That's the subject of a posting by Chris Cillizza at the Washington Post, who highlights the encouragement the GOP faithful have been able to take from the recent Republican victories in Georgia and Louisiana, which can be seen as the early manifestations of the traditional mid-term election rebound enjoyed by the party out of the White House.  More...

Run, Terry, Run!

I know I'm not alone in anxiously anticipating the day that Clinton fundraising slickster and former DNC chairman Terry McAuliffe formally commits to running for the Democrats' nomination for Virginia governor.  A report from the NBC-TV affiliate in Charlottesville underscores the deliciousness of what awaits us.

Have the Democrats Maxed Out in Virginia?

Tim Craig discusses some pretty compelling numbers indicating that, unless there is some additional radical shift in demographics, Democrats may have reached the peak of the electoral share in vote-rich Northern Virginia.  Blogging at the Washington Post, Craig suggests that this may mean very good things for the GOP:

If Democrats have maxed out this year in Northern Virginia, the GOP will have a road map for starting to chip away at Democratic margins, allowing Republicans to once again prevail in major statewide races.

I suspect there is a lot of truth to that.  H/T to Jason Kenney at Bearing Drift, who adds some valuable insight of his own.

Speaking of New Media...

If you haven't done so already, I encourage you to join the new RPV social networking site.  The site is a great step in the right direction toward making it easier for activists and everyday people alike to get involved with the process.  Check it out, and then spread the word!

Well done, RPV!

UPDATE:  I understand now that the site was put together by O.P. Ditch and Tom Whitmore, two longtime GOP stalwarts from Prince William.  Good job guys!

Interested in New Media?

Lots has been said in the Virginia Republican blogosphere lately about the party's role in harnessing the internet and other new media in support of Republican candidates and causes. It almost goes without saying that we on the right have a long way to go in this respect to catch up with the left side of the aisle. If you have something to add to the discussion, I urge you to put your money where your mouth is and attend the 25th Annual Don Huffman Advance this weekend, where questions of new media are sure to be a hot topic. It's not too late to register. More after the jump.

What America's Republicans can import from Britain's Tories

The Conservative International has a fascinating article on the strategy Conservative Party leader David Cameron has followed in the U.K. to bring the Tories back from the electoral wilderness. I'm not sure the strategy is worth mirroring in the U.S. (for instance, I doubt that a radical "greening" of the GOP would have much of an appeal-broadening effect), but aspects of it clearly could have value for Republicans.

Definitely worth a read.

Why Media Bias is Worth Fighting

How the MSM win elections for Democrats

A new documentary by filmmaker John Ziegler illustrates just how important it is to expose bias in the popular media.  Ziegler, supported by a poll he commissioned with Zogby International, shows how Barack Obama relied heavily on a misinformed and downright ignorant electorate to win.  See here for video of an interview of Ziegler on Hannity & Colmes.

Congratulations to Jeff & Amy Frederick!

Chairman Jeff Frederick has announced the birth last week of another beautiful addition the the Frederick household: Isabel Mary Frederick.  I'm sure I speak for everyone when I wish Jeff, Amy, big sister Gracie and little Izzy good health and happiness.  Congrats to the Fredericks!

And, in case you missed it, the new dad had an Op-Ed piece in the Richmond Times-Dispatch over the weekend.  It is a valuable reminder of how Republicans still stand for the principles held by most Americans, our recent electoral shortcomings notwithstanding.  Like I said last week, Republican politicians may have been defeated, but Republican ideals remain intact.
