Public Safety Groups Unite to Support Governor McDonnell’s Efforts to Solve Virginia’s Transportation Problem

From Gov. McDonnell's press office...

Seven prominent, statewide public safety groups today announced their support of Governor Bob McDonnell's efforts to advance a transportation plan.  The Governor’s “Virginia’s Road to the Future” (HB 2313/SB 1355) is a comprehensive, long-term transportation funding plan. The Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, Virginia State Police Association, Virginia State Firefighters Associations, Virginia Sheriffs’ Association, Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, Virginia Fire Chiefs Association, and Virginia Association of Governmental EMS Administrators all announced their support for the governor’s efforts to pass a transportation funding solution.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell stated, “Virginia’s public safety community works together day in and day out to keep our citizens safe and render assistance and care to them when they are in harm’s way or injured. These brave men and women depend on a safe, efficient transportation system in order to do their critical work.  Economic growth and quality of life are inextricably linked to a top-notch strong transportation system. We must act now to ensure that Virginia continues as one of the best places to live, work and raise a family.  Our public safety organizations know first-hand the importance of a safe, efficient transportation infrastructure and I appreciate their support of efforts to address transportation this session because we need to fix the problem now.”

An official joint statement from the seven groups can be found below:

“First responders risk their lives every day on Virginia’s roadways. Law Enforcement, Fire, and EMS know all too well that safe, swift response times to crashes and other incidents depend on a sound transportation system. Virginia’s growth and development has outpaced the ability of our highways and roads to handle the traffic safely, and our citizens deserve better.  The defects in our present infrastructure pose a public safety risk that must be addressed in a meaningful way. We applaud Governor McDonnell’s effort to identify a path to consensus through his “Virginia’s Road to the Future” plan. We support the Governor’s decision to make transportation a top funding priority and urge members of the General Assembly to work with the Governor, as they have in the past on other important matters, to pass a transportation plan that will address our immediate as well as our long term transportation needs.”

Governor McDonnell’s plan will provide more than $3.1 billion in transportation funding for the Commonwealth over the next 5 years, including $1.8 billion for new construction. It will end the state’s crossover issue, in which money meant for construction is currently diverted to simple maintenance. The plan ties future transportation funding to economic growth and makes Virginia the first state in the nation to eliminate its gas tax, a rapidly declining revenue source.
