Remember the classic Bill Murray movie, Groundhog Day, where the lead character is for a time doomed to repeat the same day over and over again? Well, as the 2009 General Assembly session approaches, Virginia Democrats are again setting the stage for another replay of their endless loop: taxing and spending their way out of tough budget issues, just like they have done so many times before.

http://www.rpv.org/blog/detail/have-the-democrats-maxed-out-in-virginia

Tim Craig discusses some pretty compelling numbers indicating that, unless there is some additional radical shift in demographics, Democrats may have reached the peak of the electoral share in vote-rich Northern Virginia. Blogging at the Washington Post, Craig suggests that this may mean very good things for the GOP:

If Democrats have maxed out this year in Northern Virginia, the GOP will have a road map for starting to chip away at Democratic margins, allowing Republicans to once again prevail in major statewide races.

I suspect there is a lot of truth to that. H/T to Jason Kenney at Bearing Drift, who adds some valuable insight of his own.

Lots has been said in the Virginia Republican blogosphere lately about the party's role in harnessing the internet and other new media in support of Republican candidates and causes. It almost goes without saying that we on the right have a long way to go in this respect to catch up with the left side of the aisle. If you have something to add to the discussion, I urge you to put your money where your mouth is and attend the 25th Annual Don Huffman Advance this weekend, where questions of new media are sure to be a hot topic. It's not too late to register. More after the jump.

http://www.rpv.org/blog/detail/what-americas-republicans-can-import-from-britains-tories

The Conservative International has a fascinating article on the strategy Conservative Party leader David Cameron has followed in the U.K. to bring the Tories back from the electoral wilderness. I'm not sure the strategy is worth mirroring in the U.S. (for instance, I doubt that a radical "greening" of the GOP would have much of an appeal-broadening effect), but aspects of it clearly could have value for Republicans.

Definitely worth a read.

And, in case you missed it, the new dad had an Op-Ed piece in the Richmond Times-Dispatch over the weekend. It is a valuable reminder of how Republicans still stand for the principles held by most Americans, our recent electoral shortcomings notwithstanding. Like I said last week, Republican politicians may have been defeated, but Republican ideals remain intact.

Congratulations are due to Barack Obama, whose election is a landmark achievement in our nation's long struggle with healing 400-year old wounds. The party of Lincoln can join all Americans in being proud of this historic moment. But it is important the we all recognize Obama's impressive win last Tuesday for what it is, and for what it isn't.
